The Mussel Fry recipe along with easy step by step cooking pictures follows.
Kallummakaya Varattiyathu- Musels Fry a very popular Kerala delicacy, which is quite popular in the northern side of kerala. Kallumakkaya is a type of seafood with shell. It is one of the most common seafood. The taste and beauty of this dish is the way of preparation style. Kerala is really famous for a huge variety of seafood, and I would say kallummakaya is my favorite among all. Kallummakaya is a sea mussel, which lives on hardrocks by sticking near coastal areas in the sea. To remove the shell it has to be washed and boiled in water, which helps the meat to come out fast. The cleaning and extracting the meat is the most difficult part for me actually. You will see black intestine in the center of mussel meat take this out by pressing the buldged center of the mussel. Now a days in super markets, cleaned mussels are easily avaliable.
How to Make Mussels Fry Kerala Style- Kallumakkaya-Kadukka Varattiyathu
Clean and remove dirt from mussels and keep it aside ( read the paragraph above to know how to extract mussels flesh from shell and cleaning) Heat a non- stick pan with oil, add mustard seeds and curry leaves. Allow it to spluttter.
Add the thinly sliced onions, salt and green chillies, saute till onion turns to translucent and soft.
Now add chopped ginger and garlic, saute it for few minutes.
Add the washed and cleaned mussels with 1/4 cup water. Cook for 5-8 minutes, overcooking makes the mussels rubbery, so do not over cook.
Reduce the heat to low and add turmeric powder, red chilly powder, kashmiri chilly powder, pepper powder, garam masala powder, coriander powder and saute foe a couple of minutes.
Stir fry for 2-3 minutes till mussels turns to brown and crispy, adjust the salt, pour 1tsp coconut oil and fresh curry leaves on top. Serve along with rice, chappathi etc.
