Vendakka- Okra Kichadi Recipe is a very popular dish during sadya/ grand feast or special occasions like onam, vishu in Kerala. That is nothing but a kind of raita. I am a big fan of pachadis or raithas. Normally pachadi/ kichadi is made with cucumber, beetroot, asg gourd, pineapple, ginger etc. Kichadi/ pachadi looks like a raitha mixed with mustard seeds. It is one of the very healthy and attractive dish in Kerala sadya. The detailed recipe with step by step cooking pictures follows.
I made this vendakka kichadi in a jiffy and its quite simple too. It is prepared by frying the ladies finger/ okra till it become crisp and then it is mixed with ground coconut mixture and hung curd. It is a healthy side dish and can prepare within minutes.
This kichadi can prepare in two ways, one is with coconut and other is without. There is not much difference between the two, except the use of coconut. How to Make Vendakka- Okra Kichadi Recipe- Kerala Sadya Special Vendakkai Tayir Pachadi
Cut okra into round slices. Heat a pan with 1/2 tbsp oil and fry okra till crispy and golden brown.
Make a fine paste of coconut, 1/4 tsp mustad seeds, cumin seeds and green chillies. Add this ground mixture along with fried okra and mix well. Pour very little water too and simmer in low flame for 2 minutes.
Add beaten thick yogurt and combine well. Transfer it to a serving bowl.
Heat remaining oil in a pan and splutter mustard seeds and fry red chilly and curry leaves and pour this over the curry. Give a quick stir, serve along with rice.
