Tharavu Mutta Ishtu- Kerala Style Duck Egg Stew- Egg Stew Recipe

Tharavu Mutta Ishtu/ Duck Egg Stew is a global dish made from duck egg and a mixture of vegetables like carrot and potatoes. Is a typical South Indian breakfast side dish. Which goes well with appam, pathiri, puri, puttu, chapati, bread or rice. The usage of coconut milk and coconut oil gives it a typical Kerala flavor. Stew can be made in different versions with common ingredients. This is one of the traditional ways of cooking eggs among Kerala christians and is also known as tharavu mutta palu curry. This is how my grandma and mother used to make for breakfast as side dish. The detailed recipe with step by step cooking pictures follows.


Very quick to make if you have coconut milk on hand. I used fresh home made coconut milk using ground coconut. This is one of our easy week night curies, I like this curry really spicy to offset the coconut milk’s sweetness but adjust the spice level as required. Egg simmered in coconut milk with onion, ginger, garlic and spices. Kerala Appam with Egg stew is one of my favorite breakfast.


TIPS  The stew gravy will be semi thick and if you want to make it thin add 1/2 cup of thin coconut milk to this. If you want you can use coconut milk powder instead of fresh coconut milk or can milk and little rice flour mixed with water helps in thickening the curry. Here I have used spicy round green chilies, you can substitute it with normal green chilies. Instead of duck egg you can use hen egg, quail egg etc.


How to Make Tharavu Mutta Ishtu- Kerala Style Duck Egg Stew- Egg Stew Recipe

Boil the eggs, rinse under cold running water. Peel the skin off and cut into halves.

In a clay pot heat oil and add mustard seeds, allow it to splutter.


Add dry red chilies and curry leaves, mix well.


Add crushed ginger and garlic, fry until raw smell goes on.

Add onions and salt, fry until onion turns slightly brown.


Add coriander powder, pepper powder and garam masala powder. Maintain a low flame and saute for a couple of minutes.

Add potato, carrots and green chilies. Combine well.

Pour thin coconut milk and combine well. Allow it to boil, cover the pan with a lid and cook until potatoes and carrots are soft and tender.

Pour thick coconut milk and combine well. Off the flame.


Add egg pieces and serve along with appam.
