Kerala Spicy Konchu- Chemmeen Olathiyathu- Grandma’s Style Prawns Dry Roast

Kerala Spicy Konchu- Chemmeen Olathiyathu is yet another wonderful recipe, I learned from my grandma. This is a hot and spicy seafood preparation, spiced up with the aroma of pepper corns, shallots, ginger, garlic, green chilies etc. Which has a distinct taste and wonderful aroma of coconut oil and the curry leaves. I prefer this dish to have along with steamed rice and seasoned butter milk. It’s a simple and quick chemmeen dry roast preparation. Well, I have already posted many prawns dishes, so here goes yet another easy and tasty chemmeen Olathiyathu. Hope you all will try and please don’t forget to share your feedback. I would love to say my grandma and my mom were the greatest influence on my life. They always tried to make sure I was always doing my best and doing what I wanted to do. They always wanted me to stay strong, stay independent, and not let anybody get in the way. They are all about equality in every single way and I leaned a lot from them. There are many those nostalgic recipes that reminds us of grandma that I know by heart. She also taught me about the importance of tradition in food.


Tips- This is a very hot dish, add or reduce dry red chilies, green chilies and peppercorns according to your spice level. Using coconut oil and shallots is must for the authentic traditional taste of the recipe.


How to Make Kerala Spicy Konchu- Chemmeen Olathiyathu- Grandma’s Style Prawns Dry Roast

Heat a wide pan with 1 tbsp oil and saute shallots, kashmiri red chilies, pepper corns, curry leaves, green chilies, garlic and ginger. Stir and saute until shallots turn slightly brown.

Off the flame and allow it to cool. Ground to a smooth paste by adding very little water and set aside.


On the same pan, pour remaining oil and add mustard seeds, allow it to splutter.


Add onions and saute until slightly brown.


Add chopped tomatoes and combine well. Saute for a couple of minutes and add turmeric powder, saute until raw smell goes on.

Add ground masala paste and combine well. Add 1/4 cup water and allow it to boil.

Add washed and cleaned prawns and required salt. Combine well.

Cook for 10 minutes, Stir in between until the prawns get roasted well and water gets dried up.


Serve hot along with rice and seasoned butter milk.

  1. Why is the final product after cooking while still in the wok of a dull brown color as against the rich red color of the dish in the glass dish? I like its rich red color.
