Cheera Thoran/ Kerala Thoran Recipes/ Red Spinach- Amaranth Leaves Thoran

This Cheera Thoran is made with Red spinach along with grated coconut and other spices. It is one of the very simple and easy recipe which is loaded with lots of nutrition. A very healthy and tasty side dish for rice. In malayalam spinach is called as ‘cheera’ and amaranth leaves are called as chuvappu cheera because of its reddish color.

Today here I have posted the step by step procedure to make red spinach thoran recipe the way my mom used to make in a jiffy.

Cheera- Kerala Style Thoran

Tips- Wash the leaves very well and drain it very well. Avoid cooking for long time, as the spinach loses it’s natural color and turns dark. In this thoran use can use stems too, but preferred only young stems. If the spinach got hard stems, then don’t worry cut off the hard portion of the stem.

How to Make Cheera Thoran/ Kerala Thoran Recipes/ Red Spinach- Amaranth Leaves Thoran

In a pan heat oil and add mustard seeds. When mustard seeds start spluttering, add the curry leaves, green chilies and chopped onions. Saute until onions are slightly brown in color.

Add the chopped spinach leaves and add little salt, saute for 2 minutes. At this time, the leaves will start to release water. Cover it with a lid and cook in medium heat for 3 minutes.

In the meantime, in a mixer add grated coconut, cumin seeds, garlic, turmeric powder and red chilly powder. Coarsely grind it, do not grind to a fine paste.

Make a well in between by shifting the spinach to a side. Add the coconut mixture in the centre. Now cover it with spinach and again close the lid and let it cook for 3 minutes.


Open the lid and drizzle little coconut oil on top and mix everything well and cook on high heat for 1 to 2 mins and off the flame. Serve long with rice and other side dishes.
